Pharmacognosy is probably the oldest of the modern sciences that involves the study of the physical, chemical, biochemical and biological properties of natural drugs, including the search for new drugs from natural sources. The subject is one of the core branches as per the curriculum of pharmacy profession.
The department was established in 2010; Faculty members with boundless experience in teaching and research, modern labs, sophisticated instruments and high quality research output are the strength of the department. Non-teaching supportive staff with varied skills is the added advantage to the department. In addition, the department has established with an herbal drug museum unveiling more than 150 crude drugs and a medicinal plant garden to provide a live experience which inspiring students to get involved in natural product research. The Department is also supported by a central computer lab with a high-band internet facility.The department offers extensive training in all aspects of natural products including latest developments in the scientific field.
Department Objectives
• To know the techniques in the cultivation and production of crude drugs.
• To know the evaluation techniques for the herbal drugs as per WHO and ICH guidelines.
• To know the modern extraction and isolation techniques, characterization and identification of the phytoconstituents of herbal drugs.
• To understand the preparation and development of herbal formulation and herbal drug interaction.
• To appreciate patenting of herbal drugs, GMP.
• To know the regulatory approval process and their registration in indian and international markets.
